(Per United Phbss Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Feb. 2. A dwelling owned by Mr P. Neilsen and occupied by Constable M'DonaJd was totally destroyed by firo at 2.40 this morning, together with its oontenls. Tho origin of tlio outbreak is unknown. Tho liouso was in. sured for £250 m tho United, and- the furniture for £300 in the Commercial Union. A writ has been issued, at tbo instance of Mr W. Welch, Palmerston, against Miss E. T. Crawford for tlio specifio performance 1 pf a contract to sell the Royal Hotel to ! him, or in tho alternative for £3000 dam- ; ages. It is alleged that Miss Crawford accepted Mr Woloh's offer, hut subsequently sold tho hotel to a local syndicate for £20,000. WELLINGTON, February 2. In tlio Supremo Court, in tho case oi Ranks, a toiler-earner,, oharged with, tho ; theft of a postal package, tho jury returned : a verdict of " Not guilty." Cocks, oharged 1 with assault and robbery, was found guilty of assault, and sentenced to imprisonment till tlio rising of tho court, ho having been in gaol -two months awaiting trial. CHRISTCHURCH, February 2. For stealing a horse and saddle, two bicycles, and sundries, Alexander Harwood was sentenced to six months' hard labour.
