CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

ILho following tcpotla will bo presented at to-night's meeting of the City Council: — Tho Finance Committer reports that the L'unedin Drainage and Sewerage Board having declined to pay the sum o{'£iQ64 15s 4c), being the amount awarded by the Controller and Auditor-genoxe.l for the cOst of competitive designs, such amount has been authorised to be retained from the sum collected on account of the Drainage Board. The town clerk has bten authorised to erect the necessary fittings and oataloguo bocks m the council's library. An insurance for the sum of £1000 is to be effected on the gas engineer's residence. Pay sheets and accounts have been passed for payment amounting to—Municipal, account, £1431 10s lOd; water account, £228 7s lOd; gas account, £53G! 2s 9d; tramways account, £1190 15s 10d; tramways lom. account, £2121 9s 4d; waterworks loan account,'£2B2 5s sd;—total, £] 0,61S 12s.

The Tramways Committee reports having authorised the city solicitors to defend the action brought by jfr Alexander Stuart claiming £20 for damages on account of acci&nt to hi 3 buggy. AU liability lias been declined in the' claim irom Mr James Shearer for £200 cn account of his accident on 11th April last. The following requisitions for supplies have been granted:—Lee Stream hydraulic works, £33 3s Id; ■tramways department, £200 4s. Duriiig the fortnight ended 3rd September, IEOt, tho traffic returns for tho tramways, as compared with the corresponding. period for last , year, were as follows:— 190-i—Receipts, £1165 7s Id; mileage, 30,518 miles 23 chains (hone and ciectric). 1903—Receipts, £1070 173 rfl; mileage, 15,140 miles 43 chains (horse only). Tenders have been invitcqi, and are receivable at this meeting, for wirtage of pipes for the Lee Stream hydiraulic works.

The General Committee reports that during the month of August-, 1901, 087 cattle, 7GO-1 sheep, 20G lambs, 214 pigs, and 58 calves wele slaughtered at the abattoir, of which 15 cattle and four sheep were condemned as unfit for feed. Two or three tracks of metal have "been granted for repairing the roadways around the abattoir.

The Gas Committee recommends that 3in and 2Aiu mains be laid in the township of Glenavon and Black's road, North-East Valley, at a total cost, including mains, of flbent £100. Inquisitions tor supplies costing £108 0s 3d for tho gasworks and town department havo been granted.

The superintendent of the Botanic Gardens and Ik serves has been authorised to act in the following matters: —In erecting a, fence round the pond in tho Woodhaugh Gardens.at a cost of £5; with tho chairman re applications from the combined! bands to commence the Sunday afternoon concerto in. the Gardens on tho 18th inst., and from tho Mornington Band, to play in the Victoria Gardens on Wednesday, tho 2ist inst., and to erect a platform in connection with same. A letter of thanks has been sent to the Otago Acclimatisation Society for its to stock the aviary in the Gardens with birds procurable in Now Zealand, and to supply 9. pair of white swans.

Town Belt roads leading to Maori Hill, provided the Maori Hill Borough Council contributes half cost—forming footpath and widening Newington road, cost £30; 50 cubic yards of metal be placed on Driver's road, cost £17 103; road from Regent road, 100 cubic yards metal requited, cost £35. The .committee iecommended that improvements be carried out as . follows to Town Belt roads leading to Eoslyn, provided the Hoslyn Borough Council contributes half cost: Ross Btreet to site of old toll bar, metalling roadway and surfaoitg, cost SS 2s; Levcn street to site of old toll bar, metalling and reforming roadway and improving and widening footpath, cost £51125; City read,, clearing water tables, cost 7s; Littlebourne. road, to junction with Albsrt street, asphalting, cost £12; Melrose to Queen's drive, metal, and surfacing, cost £25 18s; that the Queen's drive, from Serpentine avenue towards Belleknowes, be metalled for 15 chains, at a cost .of £70,, provided the. Mornington and Eoslyn Borough Councils each contribute onethird of the cost. Tlie committ© reported that the city engineer has been instructed to act as to the request from the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company of' New Zealand (Limited) for the footpath to bo asphalted in front of their offices in 'Water street; that Mr D. Tannock' has b'sen instructed to attend to the complaint from the North-East Valley Borough Council of scrub overhanging the road on the Town Belt,, from the Gardens to Opoho; that the plan of. verandah recommended by the engineer for adoption for Princes and George streets to Frederick street, and for Great King street, from Frederick street to the bridge, has been approved. The committee recommends that the following report furnished by tho city engineer bs adopted:—"A considerable quantity of metalling is required to put the streets in a proper state of repair, and as this is the host time of tho year for metalling I recommend that authority be obtained from the City Council to proceed with tho following works:— Metalling: Harbour terrace, 22 chains, £66; Lower Union street, six chains, £18; Eden street, 14 chains, £12; Dundas street east, six chains, £18; Albany street cast, 10 chains, £30; Cumberland street south, 15 chains, £15; Crawford street south, 10 chains, £30; Arthur street, eight chains, £32; Serpentine avenue, 40 chains, £200; Great .King street bridge !o N tram junction, £10; various small patches, 2000 cubic yards, £500;— total, £1021. Tho Queen's drivo and Maori road require extensive repairs to both roadway and footpaths. In many cases tho roadway is lower than tho channel, and requires making up with rotten rock and top layer of blue stone metal. Tho following is the estimated cost:—Queen's drive: 135 chains 6in rotten rock, £416 ss; 185 chains 3in metal, £508.155; footpath, 185 chains asphalt, £555; do 185 chains stone kerb, £555. Maori road: 35 chains of rotten rock and metal, £175; footpath, 4ft 6iu asphalt and stono kerb, £180;— total, £3330, Grand total, £7080 10s."
