The West Indian mail steamer La Plata which arrived afc Plymouth on July 27, reported that on the outward voyage, when between Jamaica and Colon, the vessel was struck by a tidal wive, which washed away one of the lifeboats. Tho commander, Captairf Newton, Who waa sitting near, was thrown to the deck and became entangled in the boat-falls,•,with tho result that both his legs were broken. Ho wa, subsequent-lv landed at Colon and treated in hospital, but died as the result of his injuries. The- P. and 0. The Union ,Strain Slip Company's steamer Waikare will again bo tho vessel to make the trip, and. will be despatched from Sydney on or about Saturday, January 7, 1905, and from Dunedin on Tuesday, January 17. The trip will occupy the eur-tomary -14 days, during which timo tho most attractive of tho sounds will be visited. The same programme a.s that of last year will bo oarried out, excepting that the Waikare will not call at. Stewart Island, but will proceed from Dunedin direct; to Preservation Inlet. This will allow of moro time bjing spent in the sounds than in past seasons. The steamer will call at tlio'.Bluff 011 the return trip to Dunedin, m usual.
