VOLUNTEERING.

The annual football match between teams from members of the Dunedin Engineers and Dunedin. Highland Rifles took place on the North Ground last Saturday. A large gathering of members and friends of both companies was present to witness the struggle, when, despite the.fact that .tliei ground was in a beastly state, a most* interesting game was witnessed, .resulting'in a win for the "Kilts" by 3 points to nil, The game was ably controlled by-Mr Pollard, a member of the Referees' Association.'- In tho evening the Highlanders were the rae'sts of the Engineers at a smoke concert, held in their orderly room. Lieutenant Lacey occupj'cd the chair, and tliero were also present, Captain Dempster, Lieutenant and Quartermaster Moncrieff, Lieutenants Midgley and Flynn, and about 70 members of both companies. A most enjoyablo evening was' spent—toasts, songs, and recitations, occupying, tho time till clojo.on 12, when a most pleasant gathering was terminated by singing " Auld lang syne." The following contributed to the harmony of the evening:—Captain Dempster, Lieutenants Midgley, Moncrieff, Lacey, and Flynn, Quar-termaster-sergeant Harper, Sergeants Roach and Bragg, Corporals Rowlett, M'Kinlay, M'Evoy, and.Armit, and Privates M'Kenzie, Hill, Marett, Johnston, Cooper, Rush, and Smith, Sergoant-major Green, and Messrs Cross and Pollard.
