SOCIALS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.

A very enjoyabh social was held at Broad Bay in the local Wesleyan Church. The night was.perfect, and consequently'there was a large attendance, Mr P. Arnott, who occupied the chair, opened proceedings by repeating the LorS's Prayer., Tho programme, which reflected: credit on all who took part, was then proceeded: with. Solos were sung by Messrs Hinkiey an<j l'nwcett, Mrs Wright, and Miss Bacon; ducts by , Messrs Green and Fawcett, and Mrs Hinkley and Miss W. Green; a violin solo was given by Mr Harold Green; recitations by Mr , Hubert Green, Misses Holland, Barknmii, and Arnott. During tho ovening the choir sang .two anthems in a very creditable manner. Tho Eev. Mr Barry, who is on his way to India, save, an address, which wasgreatly 'appreciated by tho3o present. '. On Friday evening a social was held in the North-E-ast Volley Presbyterian Sunday School Hall by the members and friends of tho church choir, when U; very enjoyable time was spent. During the evening Mr D, Beath ind Hiss Gray were the recipients of a case of silverware on the occasion of their approaching marriage, Mr Georgo (choirmaster) made the presentation, and wished the recipients every happiness in their future Hfe. Mr Beath and Miss Gray suitably responded. Miss Gray was iilso the recipient o! r. beautifully-worked pair of slippers from tho oldest member of the choir, Vγ Hutlou. The iwonly'-sevonth annual social of the Port Chalmers -Volunteer Fire Brigade wo: held on Friday .evening iu the local Garrison Hill, end vas largely attended, among the visitors being ilic .Mayor and Mayoress, Drs Hodges and Home, Captain Dodds (Garrison Artillery), Captain James (ship Auckland), several of the own councillors, and. other gentlemen.. Armstrong "The two cities"), Mr J. M \rmour.("The Holy City"), Miss Kate Sinclair 'Alwawaily message"),: Mr H. Armitage •• The raft"), and. Mr S. J. Gilbert ("Nara-" •Hh"); and two anthems by tlin choir ("Make •. joyful noise" awl "He giveth food"). Mr '?. A. "Walker, (choirmaster of the church) con'uclod. All the items were exceedingly well •mlered, and were evidently much appreciated '.y. the audience.'
