MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
The'Otago University Debating Society held an iuter-facully debating contest on Friday evening on. the subject " That the Proposal to Unite tho., Empire by Means.of Preferential Tariffs is iiijhe Best Interests of the. Empire." Dean Pitchelt, Mr P. fi, Oliapman. and Mr A. Wilson consented to act as judges. The art students were represented by Miss if. King and Mr J.. W. Shaw; lie,l» w students by Messrs Iveave and Burnard; the medicals by Messis Cotter and Malcolm Thomson; the mining students by Messrs A. R. Andrew and Allan Thomson. Tho judges, after a short ■retirement, announced that first place was awarded to.tho law faculty delegates by a, very narrow margin of .points. While thi- judges were absent Miss Edith Leach gave a Shakespearian reading, and items were contributed by Miss !Eres:eya,nd : Mr Cr?,ig. A vote of Hanks to the Ijudges, proposed by Professor Gilray, concluded the. meeting. The Literary and Debating Society in connection with the King Street Congregational Church held .its weekly mselinj on Friday evening; when, a, good attendance of members and friends gathered to hear a warfare, of words on the question "Do;s the Press Exorcise a Greater Influence than tho Pulpit." Mr A V. TJtt'ey. led" off in tho affirmative, and was followed by Mr W. Wilkinson in tho negative. These'gentlemen, who acted na- loaders, were ench followed by ihree other debaters in what proved to.bo.a clo3o and interesting contest. Messrs J. H. Wilkinson and Joseph Abernethy were the .judges, and gave their .decision in favour of the affirmative—the exponents of the press.,' The customary .vcte of thanks to the judges brought tho meeting to a close. Tho weekly meeting of the Hope of Caversuam lodge, 1.0.0.T.,' was held in the Kew Primitive Methodist Schoolroom, C.T. Bro. H. Broiigh in the. chair. Reports wcro received from tho variousofflcers for the past quarter, showing the lodge to be. in a flourishing condition, and tlio juvenile temple- to be in a very prosperous state. During the evening the following resolution va3 carried:—" That wo place ;on record our appreciation of the invaluable services rendered by Mr A. S. Adams, and that the secretary write him ackuowled»ing tho same." The L.D. (Bro. C. Brough),° assisted by Bros. SandUands and Thorns, inatelled the oncers for the ensuing term. The vote of thanks was responded to by Bro. Sandilands (on behalf of the Hope of Duncdin Lodge).
