The New Halfway House dredge, suspended operations on Friday owing to an accident to the second 1 motion driving shn-ft. To get over the. difficnlty a new sheft will ba despatched as soon as possible. Everything was working well. Tho master of tho Aldinga., dredge, reports having resumed active operations on Thursday, July 30, since which time everything has been running smoothly and woll. About GO hours ire-re occupied in denning out the paddock, in which a good deal of-silt had lodged since tho flood after the dredge was stopped. The master thinks that a good vim can now bo relied upon, as everything excopt 12 buckets is in good order. ~ , Tho ground improved on the cast side of the face where tho Blackwater River dredge was working during the week ended August 1, and it was goodi right into tho centre of the face. Tho wash, was free, and the bottom inclined to dip a little. Work was carried on on the west side of tho fact last week, and tie. ground slightly improved, The return for last week was 630z, Tho secretary of the Deep Stream Amalgamated Hydraulic Sluicing Company ,reports having received advice- from the manager rf the claim, dated August 6, that the frost was still very severe, and that he did not expect to be able to resume work a<t the claim till the middle of tho current month unless , an unexpected thaw sets in. The snow wa-3 still lying on the lower ground, and there had been no thaw whatever oven on the lower section of the race. In the meantime all the hands have been discharged pending the resumption of sluicing. A rumour was current in mining circles on Saturday that the Hartley and Biley Compamy'a dredgem&stcr had washed up on Saturday for one day's work, and that the return was soinewhero about 20Coz. On making inquiry wo learn from the secretary and directors that they have no official 'intimation of such a return. Our Cromwell correspondent in his telegram states that the dredge is still in rich wash, and that a wash-up took place., Whether the return is as large as is currently rumoured is, however, a, matter about which no definite information is available. The New. Zealand Mines Record says:—"A gentleman who has for some years been carry-' ing on geological researches in the southern portion of the Middle Island lately communicated with the department, nnd sent a sketch plan of an area where he considers tho auriferous loeks' would pay if worked by berdans, arastros, or pug mills, ore which he had assayed going iJrom 3s to 9s per ton, and the belt of auriferou3 country being 20 miles in length by two '1111163 in width. He state that the bed rook is in most places auriferous, and in his opinion its erosion and disintegration: has supplied, tbe drifts with gold. As Ire had spent some time- and money over this work he thought it only fair that ho should gel aome remuKera.tion or bonue from a department that is so liberal in siding prospecting for minerals." Tho •writer has been informed that there is not sufficient in his communication and accompanying sketch to warrant his being enumerated by the Government for geological researches. Tlie extensive business that was transacted on tho Stock Exchango during Jast week was not materially increased by Saturday's call, at which the sales were confined to two stocks. Alpine No. 2 shares were again prominent, and two sales were mads at 19a 6di and 19s 9d, and thero were further buyers at 19s, with sellers at £1. A parcel of Junction Electrics changed hands at Gs Gd, and buyers offered 6s 7Ad fox another supply, but seliers closed at 7s. Blackwater Rivers hardened perceptibly, but in First Chances sellers were inclined to incot buyers. _ The glamour of the last splendid return still influences tho price of Hartley and Ri'.eys, and on Saturday the shares showed a further hardening tendency, though a, fairly wide margin separated buyers and seller's. Manulieriluas were steady, as were also New Roxburgh Jubilees. Reeves's Proprietary weio quiet, but Rise and Shines were again in demand. Last week's returns wore very satisfactory, the aggregate being almost a record for the present year. If the conditions for working continue favourable no doubt better returns would bo obtained during the next few nionthe, but it is just possible that the river may have risen on Saturday in consequence of the sudden thaw in tho interior, whero the snow was melting rapidly, Sales were made on Saturday at the following prices:—Alpine No. 2, 19s Cd and 19s 0d; Junction Electric, Gs Cd, . I'RINCE ARTHUE GOLD DREDGING Thi) nmter of tin Prince Arthur dredge wired ou Saturday that lie anticipated no difficulty in raising tho dredge, but it would bo nccsssaiy to have tho assistance of (livers to do it. The climatic conditions since the dredgeuiaoter wns in Dunedin.at the annual meeting of the company have been of almost unprecedented severity, and in consequence the work ol refloating, tlie dredgc'lias bsen considerably more expensive, than would liavo been, tho caso if the weather had been favourable. This, to3c.thsr.wilh tho fact'tint some of.tiie claims of tho creditors are pressing, may necessitate the making of financial arrangements ponding tho resumption, of operations. Any such arrangements will, however,' bo in the direction of fully conserving the interests of all creditors and also those ol the shareholders. Tho directors wish to imyre'ss upon shareholders the sdvisablencss of not parting with, their rimes until they are taken into the .full confidence- of tho directors, which will be within the next dtvy or two. NOTES FROM CROMWELL. (Fhom Our Own Correspondent,)

. CROMWELL, August 8. Tho weather is nr.lder, with a decided thaw, and indications of rain at the lakes. Ido not expect a big rise in the river yet. The Riley's Beach Company's prospects are much bettor, and I think the dredge will have, a good -return next week if tho river keeps down. Tho. Hartley and Bilcy dredge is still on wonderful gold, and washed up for ono day'snin this morning. The ground is not deep, and it will take a good rise before the dredge is forced to ,etop. I believe the present prospects ate equal to anything the dredge has ever had. ihe prospects are much better on both the Electric Junction claims, and tho dredges will likely do well now. The Eiso and Shine dredge is on very deep, rough ground at present, and: prospects are not bua-cts ero ' ind ,is very kld on tho THE WEST COAST. (Fsom Our Own ' Correspondent.) Q-RSYMOUTH, August 9. llie JJlackwatcr district continues to find favour with dredging investors. . The return from the Blackwater River drodgo of 530z for the week had the effect on Saturday o! raisin" tho .price. Tlie position where tho gold waa obtained not being thought so good, the return therefore- proves the lead to bo broader and tetter than was anticipated.. The faco is eight duuns wide, and is estimated to average, rich and poor, at. «oz per week. Tlie No Town dredgo got 70oz. The rumour circuited t that the ground i 3 about worked out tho machine being near the top end of the olaim, has no foundation.; in:fact, there is right straight, ahead of tho dredge, without .turning back, work for 12 months more in wash that, so far as can be estimated, will give over 70oz per week, , Work in connection with Bigliell's No Town is being pushed forward, and tho dredge should start .about tho end of September. •Jt¥ Maori Kins drecl S e has closed down. While regret 13 expressed, it is felt that the present machine is inadequate far tho work The dredgomaster, (Mr. Cpwan).. takes: chargo of the Greenstone Creek c!redgo to-morrow.' Ilio Greenstone Junction dredgo got about 7oz. ; Tho ground continues very poor. Prospecting ahead is to be pushed on with. The Pactolns Company's two dredges and tho North Beach dredjro were repairing duiin" the week. Tho Grey River dredge is doing fairly well and got about 220z last week. Tho Shellback dredge gpt a start again on Monday. ■ ■;' • . Tho Totara Kat dredge oblnined;23oj lldwt: The wash is nice aiid easy, varying from 23ft to 30ft deep, and ontiroly clear "of timber. DAVIS'S BEND GOLD DREDGING COMPANY. TO THE EDIXOB. Sin,—lt is gratifying to shareholders to learn that the- !No. 2 machine has struck payable wash. Being well acquainted with the No. 2 olaim, I should say that, providing the river keeps at a tolerably low level, the company may reasonably expect good returns from the No 2.' But what'about this No. 1 dredgo? Is she too lα.? from civilisation to allow of a weekly report being published? If the No, 2 dredgo is going to repeat ■ her porfornmce of het week it surely seems a pity to let the profits go to pay the expenses, of No. 1. Perhaps after oil the No. 1. is already shut down! or maybe her prospects are good! or perhaps she cannot bottom!' A weekly report should certainly bo published as to lira doings of both dredges, thus obviating, (lie necessity of writing to or interviewing tho secretary.—l am, etc., • ''■'•- '■ CoNTiuiiOTiHO Shareholder. Dunedin, August 8, ■ ~ ■ • , ■ THE GREAT CENTRAL GOLD DREDGING COMPANY. ; TO TITO EDITOR.. ~.,.'.,.■ Sir,—Nobody seems to know and nobody seems to care what is to'becotno.of tire abovenamed company's claim. The Eureka Company's dredge;was going to help.us out of.our difficulties) arid, indeed, it was freely rumoured iu mining circles that the dredge, when working 011 our claim, had struck rich wash. Ou the top of (this report we are told there is no return,, a.n(t that the Eureka, Compjiny ; haa abandoned' the claim. A few duys ago I heard that the Great Central directors hod, determined to liiro tho Central Electric Dredge to work the claim. If- any arrangement ie really going to bo mado for' working tho olaim this winter, tho sooner operations are commenced tho better. It will be a great pity if the'shareholders, who havo held ths.cliun for so long, ollow n. valuable property to slip through their fingers, and, if' it is not po»iblo to liiro ft dredge, I would suggest that additional capital be subscribed to purohase a, machine, possibly at a vory small cost.—l sun, «lc., , Dunedin, August 8. • Shaeeholke?..
