ALLEGED NEGLECT OF A CHILD.

(Peb'United Pjjess Association.) OHRISTCHURCH, August 8. Charles and Alice Hankins wore charged in tho Magistrate's Court to-day with.haviiig wilfully neglected a seven-year-old child iii their onstody, named Charles Leonard Leaman. Sub-inspector Dwyer stated that the child was found by tho police (sleeping on a bitterly cold night in an outhouse adjoining' accused's houao at St. Margin's. Tho boy was an illegitimate child of Mrs Hankins. When found in tho outhouse ho was covered with somo flax and three dirty cornsacks. He tad no singlet, liis shirt was all torn, and his foot were swollen with chilblains. Two bricks were his pillow, Hβ wae stiff with cold, and had slept there during a fortnight. The mother toltt a constable- (hat she was, tired , of the child, and that'it would be a good job if Iμ wore dead. The magistrate £aid thai if the facts were as stated the case should bo treated as an indictable bffenoc. Sub-inspector Dwyer said that tlio facts could bo strqtigly bome out by evidence. The oase was adjourned till Friday, and instructions ware given to the police-to lay the information as for an indictable offence. The boy is now at the Samaritan Home. . ■ ... ,
