PICNICS AND SPORTS.

M'LEOD BEOS, 1 EMPLOYEES,

The employees, of. Messrs- M'Leod Bros. (Limited) held their annual picnic at Maori Kaikon 'Wednesday last (Cup Day). The s.s, Express conveyed the picnickers,. numbering about 200,. down the harbour, leaving at 9.15 a.m., ana arriving at Otakau jetty ,at 10.45. Mr Taiaroa had the water'boiling,; and iii a. very short time the whole party were comfortably settled dowi.enjoying tea in'a snug little spot shaded by high, hills. The weather wus all that could be desired. .A -long programme at sports was carried out, which ;produced'Bome very close finishes. .Races for toys, lollies, and biscuits for the children:.and fruit for all were provided. The Maori were much in evidence, and enjoyed therii'selves thoroughly, giving pleasure to many by the hearty way in which they, entered into tho sports, games, etc. A band of-six instrumentalists discoursed music throughout;Jho day, and _ also provided instrumental and • vocal mußio on the steamer.; Tho indefatigable efforts of the committee—Messr? Williams (chairman), C. Grace, jun. (handicapper), J;. Buchanan, W. Spedding (judges), A. Devenie (starter)!''A. Ogg. and E. Sunderland (secretary)—were rewarded with a most successful picnic.
