DISAPPEARANCE OF THE ARMY CORPS.

One thing appears to have been settled by the recent war. Our Army Corps organisation will probably be abandoned. It was> adopted no doubt in imitation of the German .• plan, and in symmetrical and satisfactory ar- : rangement for European warfare. But it will not serve for operations abroad. It is now stated authoritatively that the division is the • largest tactical unit that can be conveniently employed in the field. A first objection to the Army Corps, is the ■ impossibility of embarking it intact, and to' . embark and sail somewhere is a first step in our offensive warfare. The first Army Corps ■ called into existence last October 'twelvemonth fell to pieces the moment its constituents landed in South Africa. No, doubt ' pressure of circumstances led to this, but it is also certain that as a. unit the corp3 was too clumsy and too ( big. We saw. therefore, that 1 all reinforcements as they followed out went in the shape of divisions, nnd Lord Roberts worked with the divisional unit throughout. With the disappearance of the' Army Cirpsj corps troops will go. The infantry divisions will have tjieir own small proportion of cavalry and artillery, but we may look for independent divisions of the former, ami the artillery probably will he srouncd in much the same way —Army and Navy Gazette. •'
