MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.

Tho. Loyal Orange Lodge, Ho. 21, No Sat-' render, held its usual monthly meeting in the. Lower Choral Hall on Thursday - evening last, tiie W.M. Bro. Willis presiding. There was a •large attendance of members and also of visitors, two of whom were from H.M.S. Bingdove. ;Two candidates were proposed and seconded to come up -for initiation at the next meeting of. ithe lodge. After the business was gone through the election of officers for the ensuing year took place, and resulted as follows:—W.M., 8r0... Straw; >D.M., Bro. Bishop; chaplain, Bro. Tyler; secretary, Bro. Edwards (re-sleeted);' treasurer, Bro.' AVillis; committee—Bros. Escott (foreman), Scoullar, Shanks, Kedgcrs, Crpkott. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Bro. Carrick and Bro. Hunt of No. 12 for acting as scrutineers.' The lodge was closed, 'in the usual manner, and then went into harmony. Songs were contributetd by Bros. Escott, Shanks, and Martin.

In, September, 1872, the Pioneer of Dunedin Lodge, No. 2, 1.0. G.T., was instituted in this city. The lodge has been working continuously ever since, and lias an honoured past career to its credit. Bro. John W. Jago was the first Pioneer Chief Templar. A Pioneer, social gathering was held in the Choral Hall on Friday evening, to which all past and present, members were invited. Bro. J. J. Dunning, C.T., presided, and remarked that the present members, of the.loflge .were pleased to see so many ox-nicmbers present. An apology was read from Bro. J. AY. Jago, P.G.C.T.', for his inability to be in attendance. The programme, which was well received, 'was. contributed to bj :Sisters J. West, E. Smith, Gray, H. M'Gregor, K. Neill, Mackie, P. Beisael, A. Duggan (who rendered songs), Sisters Austin and Eccles aiid Bro.. Sims (recitations), Bros. A. C. Campbell.' K. E.- Chisholm,'and'Yule (songs), Bro.tt. A/ De'Lautour (vioKn solb),and Sisters E. Simpson and H..M'Gregor (piano solos). Addresses were given by Bros. A. S. Adams and J. :K. Innes, who strongly urged Templars to go forward and work heartily and earnestly in the

During, the eveuing refreshments wero handed round by the sisters, and when the gathering 'dispersed one and all agreed that a profitable and enjoyable gathering liad been held. Several'members of the Crystal Spring Juvenile Temple, No! 36, were present. It was announced, timidst- applause, thiit Bro. Jos. Malms, from Birmingham, arrives on 29th inst., at Auckland, and may be expected in Dunedin about 14th September. During the even^ ing Sister Macgregor and Bro De Lautour acted' as accompanists. The twenty-third annual social of the Port Chalmers Volunteer Fire Brigade took place in the Town Hall on Friday evening. Apolo-' gies were received from the Mayor and several leading citizens. Amongst the visitors present were Councillor S. 11. AVilson, and members of • Dunedin City, Railway, South Dunedin, Caversham, Seacliff, and O.amaru Brigades. The. interior of tho hall was tastefully decorated,' and about 75 couples were present. Dancing' was spiritedly carried on to the music of Mr Yates's string band. , During the intervals' songs were contributed by Messrs M'Tainmany (Seacliff Brigade) and E. Dwye'r (Port Chalmers Brigade); Mr M'Connell played s. cornet solo' very acceptably; while Messrs A. J. Smith and E. B. Dwyer, the directors of 'ceremonies, zealously carried out their duties. The cater-1 ing, in the hands of Mrs M'Canu, left nothing) to be desired. A most enjoyable time was1 spent by those present. A social meeting in connection with' the Upper Junction Sunday School was herd on Friday evening, when there were from 150 to, 200 young people and parents present. During. the-earlier part of'the evening a cornet solo, songs, and several recitations were rendered by the Sunday school scholars and thp choir members of the North-East Valley Presbyte-, rian Church. The Bey. D. Borrie, in tho' course of a short address, moved votes of thanks, to the teachers of the Sunday schoo^ and to those who had helped to mako the entertainment a success. Magic lantern views were shown, by the Rev. D. Borrie. , : At' a committee meeting •of the Albion Cricket Club, held on Friday evening at Cummings's Hotel, Mr F, Williams was presented with ii handsome oak salver, suitably in' scribed, from the club members in honour of his approaching marriage. Mr Joel (in the unavoidable absence of Mr Cohen), in 'makingthe presentation, referred to the hard work willingly done by Mr Williams both on tho field and on the committee. Tho Chairman, on behalf of the club, wished-Mr Williams evcrv happiness, and trusted that his .services would still bo given to the club. In thanking the members for their gift, Mr Williams stated he was taken by surprise, but that he would always remember the good-fel-. lowship that had existed amongst the,members both on and off the field. At a later hour in the evening some associates of Mr Williams entertained him at supper, and a further presentation of a case of pipes and a cigaretteholder was made. '

An enjoyable social was given by tho members of tho North-East Valley Band to their honourary members and frionds on Friday evening in tho Ferguslio Hall. The hall was'too small for the number present, but a most enjoyable evening was passed. The band played severe! bright, crispy items, and vocal and instrumental selections were pleasingly rendered by Miss Morrison, Messrs Hopkins, Brundell, Oliver, and Thompson. Mr Wilson was recalled for a sailor's hornpipe, and Messrs Thompson and Hannigan were applauded for step dances. Mr Ferguson gave a recitation, and Misa Flossio Dyer made an efficient accompanist. During the evening Mr B, Cook, the popular bandmaster, presented tho trophies, given by Messrs John Hislop and C. Ross, won at the. competition between members to Bandsman Dunne, first (gold medal), and Bandsmen F. Coxhead and 'A. Bell (two silver souvenirs), who tied for second place. After these items were over the floor was cleared for dancing, and a pleasant time was spent to tho music of Mr George Greenstone. Messrs Reid and Gray's employees held their fourteenth annual reunion in St. Paul's Schoolroom on Friday evening. Over 60 couples were on the floor, and dancing was kept up till 3 o'clock on Saturday morning. During the evening songs were contributed by Miss Bartlett, Messrs Payne, Pellett, Swarm, Black, and Wyatt; and Miss Black and Messrs W. and J. Connor gave step dances. Messrs J. Dunn, W. Coats, W. Gillies, J. Connor, and G. R. West efficiently discharged the duties or M.C.'s; whilst the music supplied by Messrs Himmel and Beath and the catering of'Mr Loan left nothing to bo desired.
