THE WEATHER.

A shower of snow about 8 a.m. yesterday, another shortly after midday, and a third about 5 o'clock kept up the supply thoughout the day on all but the main streets of the city. Trampled down by the traffic, the sharp frost of last night converted t,his into ice, and pedestrians found it not only difficult, but very dangerous, to move about during the evening.

Our special commissioner wired us from Blacks that for the last week the snow fall in Central Otago has been the heaviest kHown for many years. Report baa it that the snow lies 2ft deep at St. Bathans. • If this be the. case it was apprehended that the coach, which was to start yesterday afternoon, might not get through to Eanfurly. In any case no, dredging article, we are advised, will reach us for to-morrow's issue.

From all parts of the country districts comes news pi a heavy fall. Our Clyde correspondent telegraphs that snow fell there to a depth of 6in during Sunday night. Our Cromwell correspondent telegraphs that the snow fall there on Sunday was the heaviest for years, there being fully, 6in on the ground in the town. Appearances were threatening. Tapanui, Naseby, and Oamaru also report unusually heavy snowstorms. ■ At Timaru between midnight and 9 a.m. yesterday there was the heaviest snowfall in the memory of the oldest inhabitant. There were 2in at the railway station, 6in three miles out; at Geraldine Bin, and at Fairlie Creek lft. The fall ceased and the clouds broke up at 9 a.m. yesterday. At Christchurch there was a considerable fall of snow in the morning, and at intervals throughout the day, but it did not lie long in the city. Snow fell thickly there last evening.
