ALLEGED STEALING OF CHEQUES.

WKLLINGTON, March 20,
W. N. Cathro was before the Police Court to-day charged with stealing a cheque from John Prior, Feildiug, for £1084, and two cheqves of £100. The prosecutor is a solicitor under the Advances to Settlers Act, and the big cheque belongs to a trust account, and the others to a private account. Cathro is alleged to have been entrusted with the cheque to pay a firm in Wellington, who were to pay it to the Receiver oj Land Revenue", but he procured a draft with it, and turned it into cash. The constable who arrested Cathro at' jS'auier said he found no steamer ticket on him, and nothing indicating that he was likely to leave the colony. He had a revolver and ammunition in his possession. ■Mr Wilford, for the accused, asked for v remand to enable the latter to meet the prosecutor and give an explanation. Cathro had never had an opportunity to explain or been asked to do so. The prosecution said he had been written to, and the letters were read. The S.M., in remanding the case till Friday, commented on the fact that a weapon was found on accused, airl fixed (he bail at himself in £500, and two sureties of £250 each.
