MELBOURNE, August; 23. ■ (Received Aug. 23, at 10.25 a.m.) , The manager. of- the Eastern Extension Cable Company, referring to the Pacific cable project,'.said-that the position is this: As to .the Cape .cable his company offered to construct it, and the colonies know what the cost will be, but with the Pacific route they would not, even accepting the figures already quoted. • The Premiers' Conference represented that with extreme liberality there, would be a loss, of £467,000 in ten years. That, he says, is surely not regarded as satisfactory, when a no better, but probably an inferior, service than the present one would be the only, return. ■■■• .

PRICE OF POTATOES. ■ (Received August 23, at 9.20 p.m.) Four hundred tons of potatoes have been despatched to Brisbane for transhipment to the Duke of Sutherland, for Manila. The price is unstated, but the market price to-day is£!B 5s per ton. . '..',''..
