THE POLICE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Is the police force of this colony free from a liquor control? I fear hot. A case in point: Our constable, after long years' service and a good record, was said to be promoted, as ho deserved, to be a sergeant of the nolice. It is now openly boasted that the Liquor party had been in communication with Ministers, and his promotion is " hung i up."

He gave evidence on oath before the Royal Commission that he was sent here, to enforce the licensing laws. For doing his duty he is punished. Where does Commissioner Tunbridge's declaration of independence given at Christchurch come in, to allow such a state of affairs. Comment is unnecessary.—l am, &c., A Disgusted Libeeai. Balclutha, August 20.
