CITY RATES.
TO THE EDITOR. . | , Sm,—The ratepayers of Dunedin are a longsuffering people. The rate» before were high, but'now the municipal .rate 10 per cent, and , water 5 per cent, means that 3s out oE evtry j pound by the assessment roll has to be paid in, although it; is sometimes hard to collect; and : what with tear and ware, insurance rate, and repairs it is a very unenviable position to be a, . house-owner. The present high rates are very . damaging to the erection of mor«_ houses. Surely the great number of houses which have .been added to the city:during the lssfc two or : three years should supply enough money to j ' satisfy all requirements. i Let us hope that the city councillors, like 1 • sensible men, will give owners of houses a chance and take 6d in the pound off the municipal rate ■, for the next flnaacial year, and thus encourage i 1 the erection of buildings.—l am, &c, j ! Dunedin, Aagnst 19. J- B. .i ■ ~ ; The Ballabat Loan Office, 176 Princes street, advances money on any description of ■ portable property. Low interest. —Advt.
