The Union Steam Sb.ip Company intend opening a branch office at Zeehan for the Tasmanian trade. The s.a. Kawatiri, now undergoing alterations at Wellington, proceeds shortly to Tasmania. _'">n her arrival the s.s. Orow&iti returns to i''r.w Zealand to undergo amukr alterations to .'.be Kawatiri. The s.s. Penguin goes to Tasmania to be employed in the Hobart, Strahan, am'< Melbourne trade. The company have abo pyohased the tug Pilot, which will be used for harbour purposes. To-day should be a busy day at the Dunedin wharves. In addition to the vessels already in harbour, the ITuion Steam Ship Compan/s steamers Wanaka, Wakatipu, and Tara-vc-ia are due to arrive. The s.s. Mararoa, from Sydney,, is due tomorrow. The barque Ebba completed ballasting yesterday. She still has some cargo for this port to discharge. Tho barque John o' Gs.i)nt was taking in ballast yesterday, and after takiiig in 600 casks of tallow, will be ready for sea. It is expected she will sail for Auckland a' the beginning of next week. It is the intention or 'he Union Steam Ship Company to take the Botomahana off the Lyt-telton-Wellington running about the beginning of next month, for the purpose of a thorough overhaul, which will include the retubing of her six boilers, so that, if necessary, the whole six can be worked on special occasions, which v/ill give her a speed of about 16 knots an hour. The steamers Penguin and Te Anau are lnentioiitd as likely to replace the Rotomahana, which will resume running towards the end ot November.
The s.s. Duke of Devonshire will make Dunedin her final port of call, leaving about September 29. The barque Onyx, which left here some time ago, is loading guano for Dunedin at Maiden Island.. ,i The barquentine Cathona is loading-guano for Dunedin at Lady Elliott's Island. The ship Taranaki at Glasgow and the ship Wellington at London are on the loading berth for Dunedin. The Colonial Government steamer Hinemoa, left Dunedin yesterday morning for Wellington. . . , • • ( The machinery of the s.s. Taien 13 being thoroughly overhauled while she is in the gracing dock. "Good progress is being made with the work of extending the.refrigerating chambers at Port Chalmers. ' During the week ending July 6 the vessels reported at Lloyd's as lost, etc., were 3 British and 6 foreign sailing ships, with 2 British and '9 foreign steamers. . . .The British barque Firth of Forth, from i Glasgow to Otago, was spoken on June 11 in. ! lat. 8 S., long. 34 W., steering south. j The barque Doris, from New York for this port, is now 91 days out, while the barque Firth of Forth is 100 days out from Glasgow, and should soon put in an appearance. Ths famous roller steamer Ernest Bazan, which has been lying at Havre de Grace for ov*r a year, has been sold to Mr W. H. Massey, of Hull. , The New Zealand Shipping Company a barque Waitangi, Captain ■ Worster, left London on July 30 with a full general cargo, for this port. * ' The s.s.' Pukaki, from the West Coast, via Lyttelton, arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday evening. A. barque with black topsides and a white bend passed the Nuggets at 4 p.m. yesterday. She may be the Firth of Forth, now 99 days out from Glasgow. -■:• . •' l» ' •'/ ■ '• ' A NEW MAN-OF-WAK. . On July 5 the Amphitrite, cruiser, was 'launched from ■ Messrs Tickers, Sons, and Maxim's Naval Construction Works,;at Barrow, in the presence of about 15,000 people. Mr 3 Tickers, wife of the chairman of the firm, performed the christening ceremony. The Amphitrite is of the Argonaut class, and us 435£t between perpendiculars, but the overhanging stern and projecting ram make the length over all 463 ft. The breadth over sheathing is 69ft, and her moulded-, depth to the upper deck 39ft 9in. The mean load draught of the vessel is 25ft 3m; at which draught the displacement is 11,000 tons,. The hull is constructed of Siemens-Martin steel, the heavy external'framing of the bow and stern, aa well as' propeller brackets and the rudder frame being of . phosphor-bronze castings. The double bottom is minutely, subdivided into watertight compartments. The coal bunkers have a capacity of over 2000 tons. The Amphitrite is supplied with two under-water broadside torpedo tubes. There are in all 41 guns, and in one minute these will be capable of dis- : charging 6898 shots, varying in weight -from 1001b downwards, and totalling about 7J tons, while during the same period 38541b of powder will be used. The propelling machinery; consists of two sets of vertical direct-acting tripleexpansion engines, each set having'four cylinders working on separate cranks, the diameter ■ of the cylinders being—high-pressure 34in, intermediate s£iin, and the .two tori pressure 64in. The. collective indicated horse-power as expected to be 18,000 when running at about 120 revolutions per minute with- a steam pressure of about 2501b. The boilers are of the latest Belleville type, fitted with economisers, there being 18 boilers containing * eight elements''''of seven pairs of large tubes and 10 pairs of small. The total Heating surface in the boilers and .ecortomisers is about ■: 47,300 square feet, the grate surface being -1390 square feet.1 The working; steam- pressure yrill be 3001b; to the bduareinch, reduced to 2501b at ; the engines..
