PRESENTATIONS.

At the Volunteer Hall, Green Island, onPriday evening Mr James Miller (mayor of Green Island) was made the recipient of a handsome silvermounted walking stick by the members of the local Burns Cheir, of which he is an enthusiastic and valued member, on the attainment of Ma fiftieth birthday. Mr Witters, the conductor, made the presentation on behalf of the members, and in the course of an apDropriate speech stated that they had for sometime previous been looking ■forward to that day, and that they had decided to combine and show their appreciation by presenting Mr Miller with some suitable token, which new took the form of a silver-mounted walking stick bearing Mr Miller's-iuitials and the date.. MrMillerhad now reached his meridian, and the'rfonora wished him long life to enjoy the stick. Mr Miller, in reply id c, said he was completely taken by surprise, for hs had not heard a whisper about: the matter. He accepted .the gift in the spirit in which it was given, and he would valus it just as mucn as if it'had come from the old :ountry. He did not know why the choir should make him a presentation. It would have the effect of inducing him to try and be more of a public "character in future, and do the bsst he could in public affairs. On the invitation of Mrs Miller a large number of old and young people afterwards assembled in the hall, where dancing was indulged in with considerable spirit. The stage had been transformed into a drawing room for the occasion. - During tbe evening Mr C. Samson proposed three hearty cheers for Mr and Mrs Miller, which were given in a vociferous manner.'
