News from the East by the China mail received at Sydney states that an important addition has been made to the Russian fleet in Kastern waters by the arrival of the ironclad Nicola i I, from Cronstadt. The vessel was constructed in ISSB, at a cost of £453,000. She is a twin-screw vessel of 8440 tons, and is formidably armed. « 1 DISASTROUS SHIPWRECK. News was received in Sydney on May 4 ef a disastrous shipwreck near Capetown, the British ship Dundrennan going on shore at Stray's Point, near the Cape, and all the crew, with the exception of three, were believed to be lost. The survivors are James Gill (able seaman) and two apprentices named Martin Shtam (a Russian) and~ Joan Christiansen (a Norwegian). The following is a statement of the surviving A.B.:—" The ship Dundrennan, of Liverpool, sailed on the 3rd February last from Chittagong, bound to Dundee, with a cargo of jute. Captain Palmer was in command, and the crew all told numbered 28 hands. I was on the look-out on the morning of the wreck, and at 8.20 o'clock I saw breakers ahead, and sighted land through the mist. I immediately gave an alarm, and the ship was hauled up to the wind, being braced sharp to. Ten minutes afterwards she struck violently, and commenced breaking up at once. Two lifeboats were launched, but were stove in at once. Myself, the two apprentices who were saved, and another man, who was drowned, clambered into the rigging of the mizzenmast, the remainder taking to lifebelts, hen coops, spars, &c. We had not long been in our perilous position when the mizzenmast went with a fearful crash. With it we were hurled into the surf. We then swam clear of the surf, and fell in with a piece of the deckhouse, which answered as a raft. The wind and current brought us ashore about 2 p.m. Fishermen and others who had followed us up along the shore dragged us out of the surf, we being too exhausted ourselves." TheDrundrennan was a ship of 1950 tons, and was owned by J. Houston and Co., of Liverpool.
