Nothing' of unusual interest occurred during the passage. She experienced twesterly weather with fresh winds and moderate seas from Melbourne to Hobart, thence to Milford Sound the had S.W. winds with southerly seas and murky skies. After leaving Milford Sound she had thick weather and head seaß to arrival at the Bluff, and thence light variable winds with line weather to arrival. .The R.M.S. Tongariro commenced yesterday morning to discharge cargo, and took on board frozen muttpn. The P. and O. Company's fleet is still being increased. According to recent advices it had under construction 50,000 tons of steam shipping. Included in this are two steamers of 700U tons and of proportionate horse-power to the Himalaya and Caledonia. AstherTyser line steamer Hawke's Bay» from London to Melbourne, steamed south she fell in with a _}')tilla of icebergs. For some time she was fairlj.* surrounded by them. Captain Felgate found it advi. able to slow down considerably in order to secure safe navigation. The first sight of ice was got on February 11, when two bergs, estimated to be each about 400 ft in height, were passed in lat. 45i S., and on .the 16_h of that month those on board counted around them IS icebergs, ranjing from,2oDft to 500 ft in height Thick weather added to the unpleasant nature of the situation. At length the Hawke's Bay got quite clear of the obstructions, and. althuugh the again met with several bergs on February 25 in lat. 47 S., long. 107 E., a generally line passage was thereafter experienced to port. THE GR .CE DENT NAUTICAL INQUIRY The nautical inquiry into the wreck of the schooner Grace Dent on the Wanganui bar was concluded on the 2nd inst. The decision stated that the magistrate and the nautical assessor were satisfied that the schooner was in a perfectly seaworthy condition. The evidence showed that the wreck was caused by the grossly reckless navigation, of the master in takin; the bar when not signalled to do so, when he had been expected to put to sea, and when he was aware that his vessel drew Sft 6in, and that ther_ was not { ' over 7ft on the bar. The conduct of the mate was J of a negative character (the master accepting the sole responsibility), and while admitting the mate did not act as «ne would expect a smart officer to j act, the court was of opinion that he could not he j held responsible for the wreck, and his certi.ic-.te i would not be interfered with. The master's certificate as master would be suspended for 12 months, but his Excellency i the Governor is recommended to grant him a certificate as mate dnring such suspension. The master was ordered to pay the whole costs of the inquiry, amounting to £4175.
