ESCAPE OF A PRISONER.

iir-n- ■ LvtteltONi December 30. William Dennison, an old oifender, now serving 12 months for vagrancy, escaped from the hard-labour gang this morning. Eight men left the gaol at 7 a.m. for the top of Oxford street, where they are road-making in charge of one warder. The men had °just started work when Dennison was missed He ™f3l )ar\ Il tlr fcepl)ed beMnd a g°»e fence, and under that cover got away. The rest of the men were marched back to the gaol, the ShSSaT 8- Siven and the warders and police started to, scour the hills at the back of the town. At 10 o'clock Warder Ironsides found the prisoners hat, trousers, and boots hid in \nV Cmi T l at 10- 20 a l»d-named Harkess informed the warder that he had seen the prisoner in the distance heading towards Heatheote Valley. A large body of warders and police are now out.
