Lyttelton—Waihora sailed 4 p.m. for Wellington. Wellington—Penguin arrived fl a.m. from Picton; Takapuna arrived 10 a.m. from Lyttelton ; Mararoa arrived 11.30 a.m. from Lyttelton; Ham'otoarrived 1 p.m. from Sydney. Westport—Kawatiri sailed S p.m. yesterday for Dunedin. Grey mouth—Herald sailed 9 p.m. yesterday for Dunedin. Sydney — Taieri arrived Wednesday evening from Bluff.
The s.s. Wairarapa left the Victoria wharf yesterday afternoon with passengers and cargo for Melbourne, via Bluff Harbour and Hobart. The brigantine Stanley is getting rnnidly on with the discharge of her cargo of timber at the llattray street wharf.
The s.s. Napier, with cargo from Waikawa, arrived at the Rattray street wharf at 2 a.m. yesterday. After discharging cargo she left again yesterday evening for Owake river. The brigantine Enterprise is rapidly filling up with cargo for Napier at the Jetty street wharf. The steam yacht "Waiwera has recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul and been fitted with a. new boiler. She is now in perfect order, and will commence runniu™ her usual excursion trips from Henley to the Tided Beach to-day, and every Saturday and holiday during the summer mouths. Captain M'Kcgg has spared no pains in getting this smart little vessel ready for the accommodation of persons desirous of spending a pleasant day's outing, and will no doubt be liberally patronised this summer. The s.s. Dingadee leaves Dunodin to-morrow afternoon for the West Coast ports, via Tiinaru. The ketch Gratitude is expected to leave Dunedm for the Macquario Islands in a few days. We look' for the arrival in a feYv days of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Crusader, from London. She left there on August 1, and is consequently 83 days out. The French cruiser Duchaffault will leave Port Chalmers, we are informed, on Sunday for Wellington, via Auckland;thence she goes to Gallao Thellesper, from Kobe to San Francisco, reported that when 75 miles off the Japanese coast a rumbling noise was heard, and immediately after the vessel was thrown on her beam ends. Immense waves came tumbling towards the ship, and rushed on deck over the stem, bows, and bulwarks. The water was boiling hot, and the crew were driven to take refuge in the rigging, where they remained for five hours. .During this time great blasts of hot sulphurous gas escaped from the boiling ocean, and almost suffocated the crew. Hie scalding water melted the pitch in the deck seams, and the rolling of the vessel was so great that the maintopmast crosstree was pitched into the sea, and the men momentarily expected the masts to go over the side. The phenomena disappeared at the end of eight hours, but most of the crew were ill for several days after.
