DUE VOLUNTEERS.
The B Battery N.Z.R.A.V, opened their season yesterday morning in beautiful weather. A practice match was fired, conditions 10 shots and sighter at 200 and 500 yards ranges, Eley ammunition being used by this corps for the first titno. Subjoined are the scores of all who reached 50 points :— 200 500 yds. yda. Tl. Corporal'Niven ... 39 35 — 74 Sergeant-major Morris ... ... 36 33 —69 GunnerKoore ... ... ... 29 30 — 59 Gunner Graham ... ... ... 30 £9 —59 The Dunedin Engineers paraded at the Garrison Hall at 7.30 on Wednesday evening for inspection by the commandant of the forces. There was a total muster of 60 officers and men. After inspection by Colonel Fox, who was attended by LieuteuamVcolone.l Webb, the company was exercised in various dri'l movements by the officers and non-commissioned officers. Later in the evening Captain Falconer delivered a lecture on "field Works, fee." The subject, which was specially applicable to the work of an engineer corps, and well illustrated by diagrams, was most interesting, and conveyed some very useful information to the members. Colonel Pox has expressed himself as well pleased with the Dunedin Engineers. Next Wednesday Captain Falconer continues his examination of the signallers of the corps, and on Saturday afternoon, 29th insb., the company parades for field work, when Colonel Fox will be present. In conjunction with the members of Court Enterprise, A.0.F., the Engineers have arranged a concert in aid of tha widow of a late member. The services cf the leading vocalists, &c, have been secured, and ihe Engineers' Band have offered assistance, so that an excellent programme may be looked for. Colonel Fox last evening inspected the Dunfidin Narals in the Garrison Hall, the men mustering in good force, 60 out of a total of 66 on the roll turning out. The corps was drilled in company movements by Lieutenant Allen, the commanding officer, Lieutenant Logan, and i;he petty-officers. The movements were fairly well executed. At the conclusion of the infantry drill the corps was formed up by gun detachments, the men being individually questioned as to their knowledge of the general working, and of the projectiles used in connection with the 7-inch gun; and they showed a ' very good general knowledge ia regard to these matters. The Ordnance Band was present :it the inspection, and plaj'ed a couple of rt&lections. Before leaving the hall Colouel Pox addressed the officers and members of the corps, expressing his satisfaction with what he had seen and with the geueral knowledge, of the men. He was very pleased to see such a number of able-bodied men who possessed the amount of knowledge that they did. They must have given a great deal of their time to acquire that knowledge.
To-day Colonel Fox proceeds to Port Chalmers, theuce to look over the country in tha direction of Hoopeu and Papanui Inlets, returning to Port Chalmers in the evening to inspect the Port Chalmers Navals and L Battery. On Saturday afternoon he will attend the Gubmarine practice of the Navals at the Port.
