MINING.

NOTES FROM WAKATIPU. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

Arrow, October 15. —There were a great numVer of applications—no less than 37—dealt with at the last sitting of the Warden's Court at Arrowtown. The majority were from Cardrona, and many of these again had reference to Crift'el Face. The great number of applications shows that the coming summer will be one of more than average activity amongst the mining portion of our population. At the Crown Terrace, near Arrowtown, things also have taken a turn for the better, in so far that the owner of the laud through which the lead has been ascertained to run has consented to let miners enter with a view of working the ground on what must be considered liberal terms, which are fixed at LI pA- acre to bo paid upon entry and an additional LS when payable gold is struck, all excavations to be filled up and the surface left level by the parties entering when finally leaving the ground. About 10 or 12 men will now set to work, and although it has already been ascertained that a rich lead of gold exists there the width and turns of it will yet have to determine the numbers of men who are likely to find remunerative employment upon it. NOTES FROM BALD HILL FLAT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) October 12. —This place still keeps up its reputation ;as a gold-producing district, and some sensational returns are reported. The Bald Hill Company are again in full swing. They have got the water into their new race from Coal Creek to the claim; and it will not be for the want of energy on the part of the manager if this claim does not return dividends. Mr Donnelly has secured a splendid supply of water this season, and keeps the nozzle playing night aud day, through sunshine and storm, whenever water is available. The portion of this company's property being at present worked, is not supposed to be a very rich deposit; and it is only owing to the scale and system on which it is worked that any returns worth speaking of are obtained. There are other portions of the property, however, that are expected to pay handsome dividends when they come to be operated upon. Some Chinamen are reported to have struck a rich patch in their claim at the northern end of the Mat a week or two ago ;■ but most miners who have been on the ground before are sceptical as to the truth of the report, as the ground was pretty well fossicked before they obtained possession of it. Synies Brothers are just finishing a crushing from White's reef, and expect to be well paid for their labour in procuring it. , Mr Jauies Lythgoe has been joined by nine partners in his recently acquired claim at Butcher's Gully, and the gold still continues to hold good, paying as high as LS per week per man. The Excelsior party (Messrs Crossan and Gray) expect to have their battery started within'a week, having a quantity of stone at grass which they expect to yield about 2oz to the ton. No miners have as yet ventured over the hill— at least by this route—to Fraser's or Campbell's diggings, as that part of the: country is still enveloped in snow.

The mine manager of the Amalgamated Waipori Deep Lead Gold Mining Company reports for week ending 15th October as follows:—" Worked full time during last week. We experienced a big flood on Sunday morning. lam glad to say that the flood-wall erected some time ago, and some extra exertion during the height of the flood, kept the water out of the paddock."
