LORD GLASGOW AT AUCKLAND

Auckland, October 20,

The weather cleared for the Governor's reception, and the event passed oft" most pleasantly. The Hinemoa and the vice-regal party arrived at Onehunga at 10 o'clock, having experienced a heavy N.E. gale all night. Onehunga was grandly decorated in honour of the occasion. The citizens turned out in large numbers. The Ponsonby Navals formed a guard of houour.

The vice-regal party remained on the Hinemoa till 2 p.m., when they were welcomed by Dr Erson (mayor). The children of the public schools sang tLe National Anthem. The Governor was presented by the Mayor of Onehunga with a congratulatory address. Lord Glasgow made a suitable reply. Cheers were given for the Governor, after which the party proceeded to Auckland by special train. The reception at the Auckland railway station was a splendid one. A magnificent triumphal arch had been erected, and there was a grand display of greenery, flowers, and bunting. An address was presented by the mayor on behalf of the citizens of Auckland and by the Orangemen. Replying to the citizens' address,

Lord Glasgow thanked them for the cordiality and heartiness of his welcome to their beautiful city. He appreciated the magnificence of their reception, which left no manner of doubt as to theis loyalty to the Queen. It was impossible that his stay in New Zealand could be other-

wise than pleasant. Lady Glasgow desired him to say that she also expressed his sentiment of thanks and cordial wishes. Replying to the Orange address, the Governor said that no effort would be wanting to promote the interests of the colony to which he had the privilege and honour to be appointed. As the procession passed through the town the school children sang the National Anthem.
