Wellington, October 20. The slips on the Wellington-Masterton line have been removed and traffic resumed.
Owing to the serious illness of Mrs Duthie, Mr Duthie has withdrawn from the mayoralty contest. Mr Duthie's committee interviewed Mr Bell, the present major, and he has placed himself unreservedly in their hands. Mr Bell will therefore be nominated for re-election.
A proclamation appears in to-night's Gazette declaring Bremen and Hamburg to be infected ports, owing to the prevalence of cholera.
At the Stock Conference, which opens here on Tuesday next, papers will be read on the subject of crossbred sheep, frozen mutton, and the dairy industry, and Mr Coleman Phillips, of Wairarapa, will give his views on the rabbit question. It is expected the conference will agree to the removal of restrictions on the importation of stock into the Australasian colonies. The conference will last about a week.
The Agricultural department is circulating copies of the Stock Bill, Drainage Bill, and Codliu Moth Bill among the various agricultural societies in the colony with a view to receiving suggestions from these bodies before the measures are introduced next session.
The Hon. John M'Kenzie suifered a slight; relapse to-day, but is better to-night. It is uncertain when he will be able to leave for home.
A few bags of new varieties of seed potatoes received from Home by the R.M.S. lonic have been sent to the Lincoln School of Agriculture, ■where it will be ascertained whether they arc adapted to New Zealand soil. The shipment arrived in good condition.
The Trades and Labour Council passed a resolution to-night congratulating their president, Mr John Rigg, on his .appointment to the Legislative Council.
Messrs Andrew Hogg, John Sim, George Fraser (of Dunedin), William Hay, George Hay (of Glenomaru), and David A. Purvis (of Waiwera) have been appointed rangers under the Animals Protection Act for Otago district, and fishery officers for Otago acclimatisation districts.

At the Diocesan Synod this afternoon the commission on reiigious education presented a report stating that the adoption of the London School Board system in this country was desirable and practicable, and recommending the bishop to invite the heads of other denominations to a conference, with a view to the amendment of the Education Act so as to permit of the introduction of that system.
At the meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board to-day, the Hon. W. Montgomery was congratulated on his elevation to the Legislative Council.

The Hon. J. G. Ward was received at the railway station by a number of citizens this afternoon on his return from Wellington. Congratulatory speeches were made, and the Postmaster-general, in replying, referred to tho appointment of Mr H. Feldwiek to the Upper House. That gentleman brielly replied, and thanked the pathr-ring for the favourable reception given to Mr Ward's reference to his appointment.
