(Per United Press Association.) Wellington, March 30. The report of the Wellington Education Board shows that there were 8-1 schools open at the end of the year, with a total attendance of 11,175 children. The unusual spectacle of a man-of-war alongside a wharf was presented to-day, H.M.S. Tauranga having been brought to the railway wharf for the purpose of taking in a supply of water. Large numbers availed themselves of the opportunity to inspect one of the vessels of the Australian auxiliary squadron, and her decks were swarming with people all day. The Tauranga received about 300 tons of coal from the Westport Company yesterday/ and to-day she took on board 160 tons of water. ' Blenheim, March 30. For some time past Mr Sutton, a mining expert, representing a Melbourne syndicate, has been in this district for the . purpose of examining the Wakamarina Gorge claim, with the view of developing it with Victorian capital. On his first visit the spur wheel unaccountably smashed as steam was put on to work the pumps. A hew wheel was obtained, and pumping resumed on Saturday, but on Sunday evening the shaft broke. Foul play was suspected, and to-day Alexander WaUer, who was in charge of the engine at the time of the last break-down, was arrested, on the information of Mr E. Purser, charged with wilfully damaging the machinery. As theories exist that there are parties hostile to the success of the present company, great interest centres in the case. - ' - .....
