BENEVOLENT TRUSTEES.

• The weekly meeting of the Benevolent Trustees, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by Messrs Hayhes (in the chair), Swan, and Isaac. Messrs Solomon, ■ Gourley, Green, and Wilson (who had been attending another meeting) subsequently arrived. ' " ;■ , The Secretary of:the Charitable Aid Board wrote asking to bo furnished with particulars showing the.several sums of money invested on behalf of the institution, and the sources from which the sums were received, and also the nature of the investments.—The Secretary reported that th matter had been attended to. Mr Dallas, representing the Clutha County Council, and Mr Thomson, mayor of Bnlclutha, waited on the trustees in respect of two cases requiring relief at Balclutha. Mr Dallas spoke in reference to a woman who had been, getting 15s a I .week from the trustees, but the latter, actin/r on j the advice of their inspector, had stopped the relief. The inspector had reported that a sum of LSO had been collected-for the woman. This, Mr Dallas said was true, but she had no control over the money whatsoever. It was in the hands of several gentlemen who were appointed trustees and they paid interest on a loan in respfcet of the house she was living in. She had a family of six, and he (the speaker) thought that.if she were allowed 10s. a week she could manage to pull along. Mr Thomson referred to a man who had also been getting relief from the trustees. This relief had since been stopped. The inspector to the trustees had reported that the man had property valued at LSO. Such was the fact, but there was a mortgage of LlO over it, and the man owed debts amounting to LSS, so that if the trustees took over the estate, as was suggested by the inspector, they would be LlO or Ll2 to the bad. He (the speaker) suggested that the man be allowed 5s per week. .. -.. ft was decided to postpone consideration of the cases until the return of the inspector. About 40 cases for relief were dealt with.
