Auckland, January 13. Admon Chapman, of Norman Hill, Onehunga, committed suicide at 1.30 this morning. The deceased got a single-barrelled rifle,- and, attaching a strap to the trigger of the gun and to his foot, fired the weapon and blew his brains out. The neighbours heard two shots- at an interval of "10 minutes, which is" somewhat singular. The deceased was found, fully dressed, sitting in a chair. He was a man of independent means, about 50 years of age, and married. The jury before whom the inquest was conducted* found that he shot himself while in a state of temporary insanity, caused by domestic troubles.
The party who purpose to travel over the Stratford route are to leave here on Monday morning next, going by train to Te Kuiti, then on horseback to Ohura Valley, and walking thence 40 or 50 miles on the track for Stratford.
The newly appointed conductor of the Auckland Orchestral Union, Mr Arthur Towsey, arrived from Dunedin to-day.
New Plymouth, January 13. At the Harbour Board this morning a letter from the Marine department was read drawing attention to the manner in which passengers were landed from 2'earners calling at this port. The chairman of the harbour board, in reply, stated that bad the. dredge been here in October as promised, the channel by this time would have been cleared, and as large tonnage steamers would then have been able to come alongside the wharf there would have been no necessity for the boating service complained of. Wellington, January 13. A man named John Porterman was killed at Eketahuna to-day; through a log rolling on him.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man who attempted' to stab Dr Grace. On Monday night a man with whom the doctor had a lawsuit some years ago visited the surgery and demanded money, and being refused, he drew a pocket knife and attempted to stab Dr Grace in the abdomen.:

The Government has asked Lord Knutsford, Secretary of State for the Colonies, that the names of possible appointees to the Governorship should be submitted to them before the final selection is made.
Mr W. H. Hard wick, organist of St. Mark's Church, died this afternoon. He had been ailing some time from spinal disease.". Mr. Frank Stevens, of the Evening Press, who leaves to-morrow for Western Australia, where he has accepted a position in the Public Works department, was to-day presented with a purse of sovereigns by the local pressmen.
