The barquentine Ocean Ranger was towed up from Port Chalmers-on Jlonday evening, and commenced discharging cargo at the Rattray street wharf yesterday. The ship Canterbury commenced preparations for discharging cargo j-esterday. The barque Natal Queen was to leave Hobart on December 10th for this port with a cargo of timber. In addition to three steel line of battle ships of 4278 tons each, and one torpedo vessel, which has been nearly finished in France for Japan, the Japanese Jlinister of Jlarine will shortly submit proposals to the Japanese Parliament for building 11 ironclads at a cost of L 9,000,000. The s.s. InvercargiU left the Rattray street wharf yesterday afternoon with cargo for Preservation Inlet, via InvercargiU. The barque Lindores Abbey was hauled into the graving dock on Jlonday afternoon for the purpose of sighting her bottom, and on examination it was found that owing to the heavy straining of the vessel during the hurricane several of her rivets, principally abreast of her fore rigging, were started, which wiU be taken out and replaced by the firm of Jlessrs Gardener and Co. Her rudder was also found to be split some 2Jft, caused, no doubt, by a heavy sea striking it. The repairs on deck are being pushed on with all possible despatch by Jlessrs A\ r. Blurray and Co., the con-tractors-for the whole of the work. The fore part of the poop deck, which was lifted up by the sea, has been replaced, and the whole of her poop deck caulked, while the after boat skids and the front of her poop are in a forward state. Her saloon is being redecorated. The whole of the work is under the supervision of Jlr AA r. Menelaus. According to recent advices, the barquentine Jasper was loading sugar at Jlauritius for Dunedin. Tlie barque Pactole, owned by Jlr J. C. Ellis, of Sydney, and now on her way here, has recently been allotted by the registrar-general of shipping the letters SA 7TP of the commercial code. Steel sailing ships are greatly in favour in Great Britain at present. Blessrs AY.
