THE COMMISSIONERS' FLAT GOLD MINING- COMPANY.
to the editor.
Sir, —I think it is a shame tbe way the workmen who were working for the Commissioners' Flat Gold Mining Company are being treated. It is now some four months since this company suspended operations. A considerable sum was owing to the hands for wages at the time, and no effort up to the present has been made to pay it. AVhat is hiring done with the property is a mystery. Four months of the best season of the year gone, plant and property lying idle, and the directors doing—what ? That is the mystery. Had the slightest bit of energy beeu displayed the thing might have been kept going, and in all probability the property saved to the shareholders. There was sufficient plant on the ground to keep on working for some time, and the workmen were willing to keep the thing going and take the risk of getting their wages out of the ground. But no, operations must be stopped, interest accumulate on liabilities, honest, hard-working men lay out of their money, and eventually one of the best properties of the kind in Otago, in my opinion, sold for a song. The thing could have been kept going without costing the shareholders a penny more, the ground prospected, and in all probability payable ground discovered, they having run past every indication of it.—l am, &c, Roxburgh, December 14.
