DREDGING.

TO THH EDITOB. Sib,—What encouragement is there for local ' industry when we consider the large amount of capital which has been spent on the two dredges on Kawarau river, which are now seemingly abandoned because they wont work ? What has become of Mr Roberts who gave them suoh a high character? Surely he must,.like the dredges, have something wrong with him: surely some mercy should be shown to poor shareholders, and some one made to suffer for this fiasco. Fancy share 3 paid up to 5s selling for a bob! Who is to blame in this matter? I for one would think twice before ordering a dredge to be built in Dunedin, or advising any one else to do so after the mess that has been made. Thank 3to the customs tariff, which admits mining machinery free, if we have to send money out of the country to import dredges which will work we cannot now be blamed for it.—l am, &0., July 21, CoNTBIBTJTINQ ShABEHOLDEE.
