(Feb United Pbkss Aesociatjoh.) Auckland, July 21. A movement is on foot amongst Masonic bodies connected with the Grand Lodge of New Zealand to form a Provincial Grand Lodge for Auckland district. In reply to a circular from the Government to the Auckland Board of Education asking for an opinion respecting uniformity of school books, and referred by that body to the inspectors, the latter state that too great a variety is allowed in regard to text books, and they believe the expense presses somewhat heavily upon poorer parents. They agree with the proposal to considerably diminish the number of Auckland books, and consider that a multiplicity of books indicates the style of teaching to be poor. Napier, July 21. The Suprsme Court was opened to-day by Mr Justice Connolly, who was welcomed by Mr Leei senior member of the bar. The judge, replying, said he had not been appointed to this district, nor likely to be, but only tools the place of the judge who was unable to come. Tho criminal calendar was a very light one.

Marsland Hadfield, charged with forging the name of William Goodwin to a cheque for £08 lls sd, which he gave to Mr Light, of Lewsey, Light, and Co., at the beginning of this month. The cheque %a3 on the Bank of New South Wale?, where Goodwin had; an account;,'but was not honoured as the signature was unlike. Subsequently Hadfield called at the bank and prer sen ted another cheque, signed " Wm. Goodwin," for £35 10i. This was also returned marked " Signature unlike." When arrested Hadfleld had another cheque drawn out for £57 17s 3d, to which a Blmilar signature was appended.
