FEDERATION OF WHARF LABOURERS.

1 TO TUS EDITOR. Sir,—At the conference of delegates from the various branches of the New Zealand Federated Wharf Labourers' Union now sitting In this city the question oi federating with similar bodies in the other colonies is one of tho principal qutstionß to be settled, and as it is one of great importance it deserves cool and careful deliberation, which no doubt it will get, as I am pleised to say that the men selected by each and every branch in New Zealand are men well known throughout the length and breadth of these. islandß. The proposed rules of the federation with Australia having been fully explained by tho Sydney delegates are now under consideration, and with a. few slight alterations to suit New Zealand will, no doubt, be eventually adopted. When this takeß place the wharf labourers of the colonies can proudly look around them and say:—" Lcok what wehavejlone. We have formed a federation stronger than a standing army ; we have united for defence—not offence. We have shown that in a cause like ours all differences as to nationality, religion, and personal Interests can and have been laid aside, and we now stand united as men, with minds made up to do good for the majority of mankind. We have forged a chain stronger than steel, composed of 24,000 hearts and hands." It is a proud boast and worthy of the wharf labourers of Australasia, and I feel assured that so long as their deliberations anil conclusions are of the same tone as expressed at the present conference., success will attend them in nil their movements.—l am, &c, April 28. mm^ UNIONIST.
