LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
THSTDSDAY, JtTNE 14 The Couacil met at 2.30 p.m. NOTICE. The Hon. Sir G. S. WHITMORE tabled, for to-morrow, a notice of his intention to move— '■ " That the Council be adjourned for 14 days." THE MIDLAND RAILWAY. The Hon. Sir G. S. WHITMORE moved that the report of the Midland Railway Committee bo agreed to. .. The Hon. G. M'LBAN objected to tho report, and moved as an amendment—"That in the opinion of the Council the time has arrived when finality should be agreed to so far as granting further concessions to the Midland Railway Company." He objected to Euch large blocks of land being disposed of, and with a desire to place on record his objection, moved the amendment. The Hon. J. C. RICHMOND agreed with the matter of the report, but considered it would be inconvenient for the Council to adopt it. The Hons. LAHMANN.and PHARAZYN supported the.motion. The Hon. S. E.SHRIMSKI intimated his intention of voting for the amendment. The Hon. G. S. WHITMORE had hoped that the Attorney-general would have made some remarks for the guidance of the Council The Hon. E. J. C. STEVENS did not consider it wa^ at all necessary for the Government to take up the time of the Council by speaking on the subject. The Council divided, and the report was agreed to by 19 to 5. FIBST HEADING. :. The Hon. Sir.F. WHITAKER introduced "The Fulfilment of Contracts and Promises Act 1888," which was read a first time. . MOTION. ' The Hon. Sir G. S. WHITMORE moved— " That there be laid on the table a list of the investments in which thei Gisborno Harbour Board1 loan has been invested, the amounts of same, aud the authority under which investments (if any) have been made." The Hon. E. J. C. STEVENS intimated that tho Government had no means of procuring the information asked for. ' - - • -The Hon. Sir G. S. WHITMORE spoke strongly against the wUy local funds were being dealt with. Many of the transactions would not bear the light of day. , The motion was lost on the voices. . IN COMMITTEE. . ' '" The Council went into committee on "The Administration Act 1879 Amendment Bill." Several verbal amendments were made when progress was reported. '.',.• The Land Transfer Act was also committed and progress reported. , . • The Council rose at 4.50 till to-morrow.
