Gisbobne, June 14.
A young man. named Evans had a narrow escape this morning. He was opening a large safe at Connor, Shelton, and Co.'s office with a lighted match in his hand when an explobion of gas occurred, and he was thrown heavily across the room and severely burned about the face. A gas jet had not been turned off at night, and the explosion was thus caused.
Wanganui, June 14.
Mr J. M'Lean, manager of the National Bank here, has been appointed to the Napier branch. His place here will be filled by Mr A, H. Broad, from the Hokitika branch.
Wellington, June 14. G. B. Tennyson, skating rink manager, who pleaded guilty to a charge of embezzlement, has been placed on three months' probation. Mr William Maskell has been elected president of the Wellington Philosophical Society.
Inyehcaegua, June 14. Invercargill has now a temporary water supply nt 3 pressure of 251b, the." reticulation of the town to the extent of 24 mile's being complete. Arrangements have been made by which water from the well is thrown into tanks by a pulsometer, and gravitates through the streets. It is expected that permanent pumps and engines will be erected within three months, when direct pressure will be applied to the mains on a modified Holly system.
