This collar of tin has since been exhibited in Melbourne, and does not, we think, bear on it ths impress of truth or genuineness. Captain Brown, of the Ullock, barque, just arrived at Sydney from Hamburg, reports that he passed tinusually close, to those islands on his way out, being only six miles away; ho was thus enabled to make, through his glass, a most minute examination of Possession and Eaßt Island, but without discovering anybody or anything to betoken the presence of human beings. THE TARAWERA. EXCURSION. The Bteamer Tarawera, gaily decorated with bunting, left the George street pier yesterday afternoon on the 11th season excursion for the West Coast Sounds, taking over 90 passengers. Since the Tarawera returned from tbe North, on the Sth inst., she has received a complete overhaul, under the special supervision of Cnptaiu Cameron, tho company's j marine superintendent; her decks have been scraped, the ornamental work, skylights, deck seats, &c. cleaned and varnished. The whole of theupperdecks are covered in with waterproof awnings and curtains, and are lit by the electric Ihdit, so that dancing and other amusements may be carried out in the evenings. In the 'tween 'decks a theatre has been improvised, with scniery complete. The latter is the work of Quartermaster Hector Clinchers, who is no mean artist, and he is deserving of great praise for the mauner in which lie hrts painted the scenes and Eroscenium. The drop scene represents the river ion, and has a very pretlv effect; another is an Italian scene; while a third represents the EddyBtone lighthouse, and a f jll-rigged ship under a large spread of canvass, the foot and fly lights being lit by electricity. Tho whole of the 'tween decks nre carpeted, and ample sitting room is provided. Forward of this there is a large saloon fitted, and on either side of this are roomy sleeping cabins. In addition to a piano and harmonium in the social hall, a piano has been placed on the upper deck, and also a piano in the 'tween decks for both concert and theatrical purposes. In the saloon and Boclal hall, both of which am in most supurb order, are a number of pot plants in full bloom, which have a very pretty effect. Ou deck there is nn inquiry office incharge of a competentperson. and Mr Coverlid, hairdresser, has a 6nloon tastefully -fitted up; he takeß with him wigs and other necessaries for theatrical amateurs. Additional bathrooms have also been provided, and provision has been made for a number of deck games. In addition to her ordinary complement of boats, she takes a steam launch and Eeveral other boats, some of which will be devoted

to fishing, others for prospecting, shooting, sketching, ferrviiiK to and from t-lie shore, while the steam launch will be used for exploring. Every provision hn-j been mado lor the comfort aud amusement of th- excursionists, and we can continently say that t be arraiifenu'iits on the present occasion are simply perfect, and y.ilv line weather is required to make the excursion a complete nice. ss. Hie fallowing are the staff or officers:-Captain Sincliur; duel ofhoer, Mr Richardson; second, Mr Kelson; third, Mr Anthouv; fourth, Mr Arbon; Mr Humphreys ; nssistimt "pur««.
