AN IMPORTANT DECISION

HE NATIVE LANDS.

(Fes United I'bess Association.)

Gisborne, January 11. An important Native land case was decided at the Supreme Court to-day by the Chief Justice. The Native owners of the Whangare block brought an action against Charles Seymour to upset a lease to him and for arrears of rent. The Chief Justice decided that the lease \va3 invalid, and ordered defendant to pay £020 arrears for occupation, and granted ejectment. The decision created a great sensation, as Mr Seymour has spent about £20,000 upon improvements, and it is feared similar actions will be taken against other lessees of Native land. Mr Rees appeared for the Natives, and Mr Gully and Mr Finn for defendants. Notice of appeal was given.
