(Received January 9, at 10.30 p.m.) Two large bush fires have occurred in Mount Gabo district, and have caused widespread destruction. Crops, sheds, implements, and over 10,000 sheep have been burned. FOREIGN WARSHIPS. Tlie Government are considering the desirability of imposing regulations for admission of foreign warships to Hobson’s Bay. BORDER JEALOUSIES. The proposal to build a bridge over the river Murray at Yarra Wonga, the cost to be jointly borne by Victoria and New South Wales, has been abandoned, the latter colony objecting to the diversion of traffic to Victoria which would result, and to the expense. THE GROSVENOR GALLERY COLLECTION. The exhibition of pictures by the proprietors of the Grosvenor Art Gallery has closed. The sale of pictures has been very small, only 25 having been disposed of. The remainder will be shipped home in the Valetta. Owing to the exhibition not being a financial success, it was decided not to visit Sydney. MOSQUITO BITES MISTAKEN FOR SMALLPOX. The reported outbreak of smallpox at Balranald proves to be incorrect. The sufferer is a new chum, and was bitten by mosquitoes. CRICKET. Sydney, January 9. (Received January 9, at 10.30 p.m.) Shaw and Shrewsbury's team of cricketers play an eleven of New South Wales on Friday. ’ A CONTESTED ELECTION. There are now four candidates in the field for Paddington seat. The Freetraders will consolidate their forces to secure the return ot Mr Helmrich. The other candidates are Independents. CENTENARY AGRICULTURAL SHOW. (Received January 10, at 1.25 a.m.) Four thousand and fifty entries have been received for the agricultural and pastoral show to be held, in connection with the Centenary Exhibition. THE BELLI DISASTER. Newcastle, January!). (Received January 9, at 10.30 p.m.) The Wallsend miners have agreed to guarantee £3OO towards the costs of a prosecution to compel the payment to the widows of the victims of the Bulli colliery accident of the money collected for their assistance. SHIPPING CASUALTY. Adelaide, January 9. (Received January 9, at 11.50 a.m.) The barque Saturn is insured in the South British for £BOO. DIPHTHERIA AT THURSDAY ISLAND. Brisbane, January 9. (Received January 9, at 10.30 p.m.) Diphtheria has broken out on Thursday Island, where some of the Balimba’s immigrants are quarantined.
