DEPUTATIONS TO MR MITCHELSON.
(Per United Press Association,) Auckland, January 9. A. deputation of members of the Education Board waited on the Minister of Public Works to-day to represent to him the serious effect which would follow the sudden deprivation of the usual Government grant of £lOOO from the Girls’ High School. Mr Mitchelson said he did not think the Government had any intention of repudiating its liability up to the end of March next. He asked for a detailed statement of the board’s liabilities for the school from that time forward, and he promised to endeavour to arrange for the board to be reimbursed for any contingent liabilities up to the end of the present year that could not be avoided. In answer to Mr Goldie, Mr Mitchelson said he would lose uo time in bringing into immediate operation the labour bureau appointed by the Government. Mr Moat saw the Minister of Public Works to-day, and in reply to a question the latter said that immediately he returned to Wellington tenders would be called for the construction of the first section of the North Auckland railway from Helensville northward. Messrs E. Carr and A. P,.Robert, two gentlemen interested in the timber trade, interviewed Mr Mitchelson to-day, complaining that whilst the Government were advertising for 15,000 telegraph arms they were confining competition to Wellington and Taranaki. Mr Mitchelson at once wrote out a telegram directing the authorities at Wellington to include the province of Auckland.
