Sir Charles Mitchell, cx-Gorernor of Fiji, went South by the To Anau this afternoon, also a number of Northern tourists on their way to join the Tarawcra at Port Chaim, rs for the trip to the Sounds. THE SQUADRON AT WELLINGTON. The squadron came into port under steam at noon to-day, and presented a very pretty appearance as they entered in column, then deployed into pairs, and finally came up the bay four abreast and anchored unusually closu in, Tho admiral with his officers and men are to bo feted in all sorts of ways during their sojurn here. They expect to leave on flloudny next, conveying his Excellency tho Governor to Sydney for tho centenary celebration. Nelson, January 9. SECONDARY SCHOOLS CONFERENCE, Tho first meeting of the Secondarj’ Schools Conference of New Zealand took place this morning at tho Girls’ College. Thero were present : The rectors of Dunedin, Waitaki, and Timaru High Schools, the principals of Auckland College, Wellington and Otago Girls’ High Schools, and Bishopdale College and Nelson College for Girls, and the head masters of Christchurch, Akaroa, and Napier Schools. Mr Halkctt Dawson, of Timaru High School, was unanimously elected president. He delivered an inaugural address of some length. The subjects chictly discussed to-day were those t-.iising out of the n latimi-hip between the- university and secondary schools.
