Auckland, July 19.

A fire broke out in Johnston's store, Otahuhu, at 5.20 am. to-day. The store was totally destroyed, also Johnston's dwelling-house adjoining. The post and telegraph oflice and Jackson's butchery were also burnt to the ground. The telegraph instruments were saved. The insurances were as follow :—Sun office: Johnstone's stock, £700; private dwelling, £120; furniture, £50. New Zealand oflice: Johnston's (shop and dwelling, £200; cart shed, £3; post oflice, £30. Jackson was not insured.

A two-roomed cottage at Te Papu, Onehunga, occupied by a man named Morris, was destroyed by fire this morning. There were no insurances.

Wellington, July 19. The charge under the Cemeteries Act against Messrs Morris and Son, undertakers, for exhuming the body of a Chinaman without a permit from the Colonial Secretary, will be taken on Friday. Tho City Council havo decided to strike a rate of 3d in tho pound for hospital and charitable puruoses. At the Police Court to-day an elderly woman, named Ann Parker, umbrella repairer, was charged with larceny of a silver watch from the body of Charles Valiunbraitor, which was picked up in the harbour yesterday. Accused said that she certainly saw a dead body on the beach,and she picked up a watch. Inspector Browne said that the body was yesterday washed up on the beach at Nghauranga, and the watch was seen attached to deceased's waistcoat. Some time afterwards the watch was missed, and accused having passed by, suspicion fell upon her. She was arrested and brought to the police station, but when searched the watch could not be found upon her. In the meantime she had gone to her home, and afterwards her daughter brought down the watch, which she had found in her back yard. A remand was granted. A (ire at the Upper Hntt destroyed a twostall stable and cowshed, the property of E. and IT. Bonsons. Tho buildings contained two chall'outtors and a quantity of chaff. The loss is estimated at £200. There is no insurance.

Palmkijston Nohtu, July 19. A daring burglary was committed at Fentou's Royal Hotel, Palmerston North, between midnight yesterday and 6 this morning, when the iron safe box was bodily removed from the bar into the middle of the road and the contents abstracted. A small cashbix containing about XiJO in notes was taken, but four watches and two cheques were left behind. Suspicion fal's on two men who woj seen about the hotel yesterday and who have disappeared.

CIIMiVMOUTH, July 19. The restoration of the railway line to North harbour works was commenced to-day, an allowance bciug made to the contractor for carrying out the work. There is a heavy soa ou the bar, and steamers outside cannot enter. The weather is again cold. Measles are not yet out of tho district. Several cases of rheumatic fever and other form of sickness through cold

and damp from thu floods are reported. Mr 11. A.Stratford, formerly Resident Magistrate here, has contributed £5 to the flood relief fund.
