~ T Auckland, June 3. but J. i*. Oxley, a gentleman well known in shipping circles, and who has been a resident in Auckland for 30 years, died to-day
_~ "Wellington, June 3. Ihe case against Rodgers, charged with being concerned in a racing consultation, was commenced to-day in the Resident Magistrate's Court, and adjourned until to-morrow. Owing to the neglect of the licensee of the Panama Hotel to make formal application at today's meeting of the Te Aro Licensing Committee for a confirmation of his temporary transfer his application for a new license was adjourned for a, month; consequently the hotel will have to be closed for that period. At the coming elections Mr Fitzherbert will seek re-election for the House, and will probably be opposed by Messrs Mason and E. Wakefield.
a/.-., , Hokitika, June 3. A fare broke out at 2 o'clock this morning in a carpenter s workshop occupied by a man named Ross, and owned by Mr Teasdale. For some time the cottage adjoining was in great danger The damage amounts to £40. The origin of the fire is unknown.
m j , Chbistchukce, June 3. To-day the late Mr Robert Wilkin's American trotters were sold by auction. Berlin was bought by Mr G. Rhodes, of Timaru, for 275gs • Blackwool and Abdallah by Mr Max Friedlander, of Ashburton, for 160gs; and the mares Blue Grass Belle and Fanny Belle were bought by Mr Brown, the well-known Christchurch sporting man, for 50gs each.
