The following TESTIMONIALS in favour of Mr J. M'Donald's CEMENT have Jbeeu handed to us for publication:— October 20, 1886. To Mr James M'Donald. Tests of the sample* of Otago cement submitted to me for experiment gave an average tensile breaking 6train of 10701b on 2$ Bquare inches 14 days after mixing. Briquettas were gauged with fresh water, allowed to set 24 hours, and immersed in salt water for six days; the remaining seven days they were exposed to the air. F. W. Marchant, A.M. Inst. C.E., Resident Engineer Timaru,Harbour Board. Public Works Department, Engineer-in-Chief's Office, Wellington. November 12,1886. , James M'Donald, Esq., Lime Merchant, &c, Dunedin. With reference to the particulars of tho tests of your hydraulic limes and cements sent you on the 7th ult., the four samples of cement marked A, B, C, and D last received are all hydraulic cement, setting rapidly under water without blowing or showing any other defects. With the exception of two of the D quality, all the seven days' tests for strength come over tbe Government specification for colonial cement, and the average of the B sample i is considerably above the strength we specify for English cement. I have no doubt you are now on the way to produce a cement (equal all round to; the Imported article. All that is wanted is uniformity of quality [Note.—The samples submitted to Mr Blair were: four different compositions for the purpose of testing, and we are now manufacturing from the particular composition which gave the best results — I J. MD.]

Dunedin, April 28,1887. To J. M'Donald, Esq., Cement Manufacturer. Sir,—Having been present at the trials of your cement at the stores In Vogel street a shorttimesince, I was induced to give instructions for it to be used at the new building* now in course of erection for the Daily Times and Witness Company, Dowling and Macandrew streets. I have now much pleasure in reporting that it has given me entire satisfaction, and I shall have no hesitation in recommending it to any person requiring cement. I consider it to be as good as any cement I have used duriug a period of 25 years in Dunedin. So long aB you make an article of the quality now being supplied to my present work I shall use no other, feeling it a duty to support the colonial-made cement when the quality is equal to and the price no more than the imported article.—l am, &c., Hy. F. Hardy, Architect. Dunedin, May 2,1887. This is to certify that I have examined Mr M'Donald's Portland Cement, manufactured in Dunedin, both as to Bamples submitted and as to the process of manufacture, aud have to report as follows -. - 1. Various samples during thelast Bix months have been submitted to me and I have had them thoroughly tested for the following purposes :—For the use of construction as mortar, for compounding plaster, and for mixing in with concrete -, aud I have always found this Cement for these purposes quite equal to the best that I have known imported. 2. I went over the factory where the Cement is made, and found that the various raw materials used were of the proper sort and very carefully chosen ; also, that the process used was iii every way suitable to production of a first-class article in large quantities. In conclusion, I have to state tbat ao'well satisfied am I of the'quality of this Cement that I consider it advisable to use it in place of the imported brandß, not only on account of its general quality, but because it is possible to get it fresh, and therefore in better condition for use. Frank W.:Petre, Engineer and Architect, Dunedin and Christchurch. ~ _ Dunedin, 2nd May 1887. Mr James M'Donald, Cement Manufacturer. Sir,—For some time past I have been making test of Portlaud Cement of various brands, and you will be glad to hear that your Cement in every "case has stood the highest; also, that it exceeds the Government test of 3001b to an inch.—Yours faithfully, Chas. D. Hall, Civil Engineer and Architect. m „ -, ~.-. ~ Dunedin, 2nd May 1837. To Mr J. M'Donald, Dear Sir,—l have the pleasure to certify that I have used the Cement manufactured by you, and the same has given me every satisfaction ; and also that It stands a very high teusil strain.—Yours truly, L. BOLDINJ. Oamaru Harbour Board, „. Oamaru, 30th Ajiril 1887. ..bir'"~ lu reP'y to Jour telegram I have, to state that the parcel of Cement from your manufactory that I tested for Mr Ussher stood the high strain of 14201b before breaking, after being made aud tested In the U6ual way; that being an average of tho breaking strain of nine briquets.—T am. yours obediently, Thos. Forhmtur, , - - _, * Secretary. Jttmes M'Donald. Esq., Cement Mauufaelurer, Dwaediu. Amy
