Drunkenness.—Seven persons were dealt with for drunkenness. Vagrancy.—William Stokes was charged with having no lawful visible means of support.—lnspector Weldon said the police had no wish to send him to gaol if he could get work, but he had been sent away from the court twice before.—Convicted and discharged. Foul Chimney.—Andrew Gorgenson was charged with having allowed a chimney to catch fire iv his house in Stafford avenue, fcr which he was fined Is and costs. ■Stabbing.—Richard Phelan (for whom Dr Fitchett appeared) was charged with that he did on the 12th inst., at Dunedin, unlawfully cut and wound one William Hook with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. — Dr Fitchett requested that the case should be withdrawn, saying that Phelan was not drunk at the time, but that the stabbing was the result of a pure accident; besides, accused had received medals from the Humane Society for saving lives, and it was therefore very unlikely that he should attempt to injure the life of any person.— Inspector Weldon read the following letter which he had received from Hook :— Dunedin, May 14, 18S7. Mr Inspector Weldon. I shall feel obliged if you will have the proceedings against Mr Phelan withdrawn. He and I have always been on the most friendly terms, and I am quite satisfied that my hurt was the result of a pure accident. W.m. Hook. —The case was dismisfed.
