The polling took place to-day to decide whether the city is to borrow £25,000 for permanent works, and excited great interest. It is not intended to increase the rates to pay tho charges on loan, and the proposal met with a much larger share of support than bas hitherto been accorded to similar proposals of the City Council. The councillors and most of tho city property-holders worked well to secure the requisite number of votes. Their efforts were successful, the result beirig : For tho proposal, 210S; against, 183; informal votes, 35. As 1050 votes were required to carry tho proposal, this gave an overwhelming majority ill its favour. The announcement Of the result by tho Mayor was received with loud ohoera.
