CITY POLICE COURT.

Fbiday, December 7.

(Before Messrs J. Logan and J. P. Jones, Justices.)

Drunkenness.—One person was fined 20s and costs fer being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart on the Portobello road. Abusive Language.—Susannah Hutchins (for whom Mr Denniston appeared) was charged with having, on the 4th inst., been guilty of threatening behaviour by violently shaking her cienched hand at Julia Goodwin, with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. This was a police case, bdt the evidence showed that the affair was of a trumpery nature. Tho parties ara rival fruiterers, and defendant went to prosecutrix and charged her with having made certain defamatory statements.—The case was dismissed.

Assault. —Charles Ab Mow was charged by Afjnes Roaenbrock with having assaulted her in Stafford street on the 3rd inst., and tbo complainant asked that the defendant should be bcund over to keep the peace.—Mr F. Chapman appeared for the defendant.—The complainant's statement that the defendant struck her was uncorroborated, and was Contradicted by the defendant and another

witness. It appeared that the complainant and defendant had procured a marriage license from the Registrar's office, that the parties ware not marriod, but that defendant regarded tho license as a marriage certificate. Tha defendant had merely endeavoured to induce the woman, whom ha bolioved to_ be his wife, to return home; but ho promised the Bench not to apeak to or molest her again.—The case was dismissed.
