THE OAMABU DISTRICT HIGH S;HOOL. A letter was received from the Oainaru Committee, objecting to the proposal to reduce the ■District- High School to the position of a district school. : The Chairman stated that two months ago notice was given of a proposal to disrate the Oamaru District High School, there now being a- High School established in that district. The Oamaru School Committco, however, requested that the matter should now be left . • over for another month. Mr Ramsay had been informed that the new High School was very little used by the people of the town of Oamaru. The building was three miles away, and was principally used by people in its neighbourhood. The people there, as far as he understood, were very much against the - disrating of the District High School. JSe was further informed that only 20 or 30 pupils were attending this great establishment which bad been built for a high school. ■ . " '-Mr Begg had been informed that there were between 60 and 70 pupils attending the High School. ■"■■■:'■•■ • Mr -Ramsay, had only made those remarks for the purpose of showing that there' was a feeling in Oamaru against the proposal to dis-' rate the District High School. The Chairman asked if it was proposed to postpone tho matter. . Mr Ramsay thought that unless they took the opinion.of the people of Oamaru a postponement would not do any good. Mr M'Kenzie said he was not familiar with the question, and would move that it bs postponed for a month. Mr Fraer said that one reason why they should tiotf disrate a district high school was : that it was more accessible to middle class people who could not afford to send their children to a high school. The 'Chairman pointed out that if there ■ were any valid reasons for keeping open a district high Bqhool at Oamaru, the reasons were 10 times stronger in Dunedin, where the population was much larger. He thought the , principle was admitted throughout tho Colony, • that where a real' high school was established there was no reason for keeping up a district high scTiool as well. . • ~'The motion for postponing the question for a mouth was agreed to. - . ■ THE DUNEDIN SCHOOL COMMITTEE'AND THE - * ' BOABD. The following letter was received from the Dunedin School Committee: — Dunedin, August 21,1833. E. G. Pijde, Esq., Secretary Education JUoara.
