O'Donnell was brought up to-day at the Bow street Police Conrt, charged with the murder of Carey at Port Elizabeth in July last. Some preliminary evidence was taken, and the case remanded.
Generai Booth, of the Salvation Army, has been arrested and imprisoned at Neufchatel for having continued religious demonstrations against the orders of the authorities.
The muttpn by the Cuzco, from Sydney, is realising Bd per lb, and a small quantity of beef by the Bame vessel is selling at 4W per Ib.
At the wool sale today 9200 bales were offered. No material change was experienced, but the market is, if anything, weaker. Fleece and scoured wool are now Jd lower than at the close of the last auctions. (Received September 19, at 7.45 p.m.) News has been received from the west coast of Africa, that tribal hostilities have again broken out in Ashantee. A severe battle has been fought at Coomassie, resulting in the defeat of the adherents of King Calcalli, who Buffered great slaughter, and have been compelled to retreat from the capital towards the country occupied by the Gamans, one of the tribes who are opposed to the king. (■ ,» Au j A daring and unaccountable robbery has been perpetrated at the Commercial Bank of Australasia in this city. .Sixteen bars of gold were placed in the safe last night by MrPin-? nock, manager of the branch bank at Ballarat,: who took possession of one of the keys of tho safe, another officer of the bank keeping the'; second. They noticed this morning that the* key-hole of the safe was obstructed, and on', opening the safe it was found that 14 of tho, bars of gold were missing, besides £1000 in notes and gold coin.
