THE OAMARU REFRIGERATING COMPANY.

The provisional directors of the proposed meat-freezing company for the North Otago district, before taking any active steps in the formation of the company, instructed the secretary (Mr George Sumptor) to write to the directors of tbe New' Zealand Refrigerating Company to ascertain1 what were their intentions with regard to the establishment of a branch here. The following^ questions were asked:—"l. Are your Company prepared to establish a branch of their freezing business in Oamaru, and within what time, to be conducted on the following principles : (a) AH fat stock raised in the district to bo slaughtered there; (b) all fat stock so .slaughtered to be shipped from the port of Oamaru? 2. What number of sheep will the Company undertake to ship from the port of Oamaru during the year 1884, provided stockowners supply the sheep; in other words, what 'bottoms,' Bailing vessels or steamers, or both, can the Company guarantee to come to the port of Oamaru for the special purpose of loading sheep there during next year? 3. Will the Company agree to the appointment of a local board of directors to be elected by local shareholders, to whom would bo referred, inter alia, the management of local matters, including the selection of site? The above questions are put with the view of enabling the provisional directors to come to a decision as to whether they will proceed with the formation of this company or join with you.-" N , The following is the text of the reply:— "Your letter of Bth inßt. was Hid before the directors to-day, and I am instructed to reply that, should this Company open a branch in Oamaru, the directors will be guided in. the conduct of the business as circumstances may. ariss. At the general meeting the shareholders authorised the issue of fresh capital." This the provisional directors of the local company consider so unsatisfactory that .they have decided to take immediate and energetic steps to form the local company.
